Lourdes

Lourdes takes its name from the town in southwestern France that became a major Catholic pilgrimage destination. Its importance as a personal name is closely connected with Our Lady of Lourdes and with Bernadette Soubirous, who reported visions of the Virgin Mary there in 1858. The place-name’s deeper linguistic origin is uncertain.

The name is used beyond France, especially in Catholic naming traditions, and may appear within the compound María de Lourdes. Portuguese Lurdes is a related spelling. A child called Lourdes might be named for family devotion, a pilgrimage, a relative, or a personal connection with the town itself. Those religious and geographical associations are the clearest parts of its story, giving it a specific setting and history even without a settled literal translation.
