Lucila

Lucila is used in Spanish and Portuguese and comes from Latin Lucilla, originally a diminutive of Lucia. The wider family is linked with lux, the Latin word for light. The single l in the middle distinguishes Lucila from Italian Lucilla and from French Lucille, while the names share a common ancestry.

The Chilean poet known as Gabriela Mistral was born Lucila Godoy Alcayaga. Her work in poetry, education, and diplomacy gives Lucila a substantial literary and cultural association in Latin America. This connection adds a specific story for families who want more than a pleasant meaning. Lucila can also continue a family line of Lucias or Lucilles while retaining a form established in Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking communities, with its own spelling and regional history.
