Luiz

Luiz is a Portuguese form in the Louis name family, particularly familiar in Brazil. Its older Germanic elements combine fame with battle, giving the usual meaning “famous in battle.” The z ending belongs to an established Portuguese spelling, while Luís is another form encountered in the same language.

The name's relatives include French Louis and Spanish Luis, so its short shape connects with a much wider European history. Those relationships can be useful in multilingual families, where the same ancestral name may appear differently in different generations. Luiz retains the specific spelling used by many Portuguese-speaking families rather than translating it into the English or French form.
