Madelyn

Madelyn is an English spelling in the Madeline and Madeleine family, ultimately connected with Magdalene, meaning “woman from Magdala.” Magdala is a place name associated with a word for a tower. “High tower” is therefore an interpretation behind the place name, rather than the most direct translation of Madelyn itself.

The ending is a practical reason some parents prefer Madelyn: it suggests MAD-uh-lin more clearly than spellings that readers may end with “line.” Maddy is a familiar nickname. Madeleine, Madeline, and Magdalene offer different written forms and historical connections within the family; Madison shares a likely nickname but has a different origin. Popularity statistics count these spellings separately, so Madelyn’s rank should not be read as a count of every child answering to Maddy.
