Madisson

Madisson is a spelling of Madison, a name that developed from an English surname. The surname is traditionally understood through a parent’s name, with explanations involving a short form of Maud or Matthew. Those different proposals should not be collapsed into a single certain translation.

Madisson doubles the s, while Maddison doubles the d. The distinction is visual rather than a reliable guide to a different pronunciation. Maddie is a familiar nickname for any of these forms. Families comparing them may want to decide whether preserving a surname spelling or choosing a particular written pattern matters most.
