Makari

Makari is a form of the Russian name usually also written Makariy or Makary, ultimately derived from Greek Makarios. The Greek name is associated with being blessed or happy, and its use has a long Christian history through saints. Its contemporary sound does not make it a newly invented combination of names such as Makai and Amari.

Mak is a possible informal shortening, while the full name has three syllables. The modern Greek expression makári is another association some families may encounter, but its use as a wish should be distinguished from the historical personal name. Parents interested in a Russian family connection can choose the transliteration that best preserves the name and pronunciation they intend.
