Malena

Malena is used as a shortened form of Magdalena, particularly in Spanish-speaking families. Magdalena means from Magdala, the town associated with Mary Magdalene in the New Testament. The shorter name keeps the beginning and ending of Magdalena while giving the whole form a lighter, more compact rhythm.

This history makes Malena a natural option for honoring a Magdalena without using all of its syllables. The place name behind the family is related to a word for tower, although from Magdala is the more direct explanation of the personal name. Malena can also stand independently rather than serving only as a household nickname. Its recognizable relationship to Magdalena gives it a substantial background while allowing a very different everyday sound.
