Mar

Mar is the word for sea in Spanish, Catalan, and Portuguese, ultimately connected with Latin mare. As a personal name, its clearest image is therefore the sea itself. The short form can also be chosen as a familiar name for someone with a longer Mar-beginning name, depending on family usage.

Those two paths need not be identical: a standalone Mar may be a direct nature name, while a nickname for Martina follows a different older name history. Marina offers a longer sea-related comparison, but Mar keeps the complete natural image in one syllable. Its simplicity allows a family’s geographical or personal connection with the coast to remain central.
