Marcelo

Marcelo is a Spanish and Portuguese form of Marcellus, a diminutive in the Marcus name family. Marcus is traditionally associated with Mars, the Roman god of war. The gloss “little warrior” summarizes that chain but is not a direct modern word-for-word translation of Marcelo.

Marcello is the Italian spelling with a double l, and Marcellus preserves the Latin ending. Marce can be a personal nickname. Families choosing Marcelo to honor a Mark or Marcus can explain the broader family connection while keeping the different language form. The full name’s final vowel changes its rhythm from the shorter English Mark.
