Margarita

Margarita belongs to the Margaret name family, from a Greek word for a pearl. It is an established form in Spanish, Greek, Russian, and other languages. In Spanish, margarita is also the ordinary word for a daisy, so the name can carry both a gemstone history and a familiar flower association.

Mikhail Bulgakov’s The Master and Margarita gives it a strong literary reference, with Margarita at the center of the novel’s story. Rita is a long-established short form that creates a much more compact everyday option. English speakers may also recognize the cocktail, but the personal name has a much older history. Its different cultural associations allow a family to emphasize literature, heritage, or the floral meaning.
