Marian

Marian has more than one history. In English feminine use, it belongs to the Mary family, whose ultimate Hebrew root Miriam has an uncertain meaning. Proposed translations such as “bitter” or “beloved” are theories, not a settled definition. In some European languages, masculine Marian instead descends from Latin Marianus, a name connected with Marius, also of uncertain derivation.

Maid Marian in the Robin Hood stories and singer Marian Anderson are familiar associations for the English feminine name. Marion is a closely related spelling in that tradition, although neither spelling has been used exclusively for one sex. Parents may appreciate Marian’s literary connection or family history while choosing which linguistic background they intend to honor.
