Marianne

Marianne combines Marie and Anne. Anne belongs to the Hebrew name family associated with grace, while Marie comes through Mary, whose original meaning is uncertain. The combination can honor both names without requiring all the proposed meanings of Mary to be joined into one literal phrase.

Leonard Cohen’s song So Long, Marianne, written for Marianne Ihlen, gives the name a recognizable musical association. Mariane and Mariann are close spelling alternatives, while Maryann makes the two English components especially visible. Marianne preserves the French forms together, offering a way to connect family names that may otherwise appear separately as a first and middle name.
