Mariella

Mariella is a diminutive form of Maria used in Italian and Dutch naming. Maria belongs to the Mary and Miriam family, whose ultimate meaning is uncertain. Interpretations involving bitterness, belovedness, or the sea have been proposed, but none should be turned into a guaranteed translation of Mariella itself.

Mari and Ella give the full name two different everyday options. Maria provides the clearest family connection, while Marielle offers a related form with a different ending. Parents honoring a Maria can choose Mariella to keep the relationship while giving the new name more syllables. Its ending is part of the established form rather than proof of a separate compound with an unrelated Ella.
