Marin

Marin belongs to a name family derived from Latin marinus, meaning “of the sea.” It developed as a masculine name in several European languages, including French, Croatian, and Romanian, while English-speaking families may also use it for girls. The maritime meaning gives it a nature connection that does not depend on a particular beach or coastal place.

Croatian tennis player Marin Čilić is a well-known bearer of the masculine form. The same letters also occur in place names, so some families may arrive at Marin through a personal connection with a location rather than the older given name. Its pronunciation can change between languages, and a family's own version is worth introducing clearly. Marinus and Marino help show the wider name family behind its compact five-letter form.
