Marisol

Marisol developed as a shortened form of María de la Soledad, a Marian name connected with Our Lady of Solitude. That devotional history explains the name more directly than the familiar interpretation “sea and sun.” The Spanish words mar and sol do resemble its two parts, however, creating a separate and understandable nature association.

The artist Marisol Escobar, often known simply as Marisol, is a notable bearer. The name can therefore suggest art, a Spanish-language family tradition, or its original religious background, depending on the family. Marysol and Marizol are related spellings. It is useful to keep the attractive sea-and-sun imagery separate from the historical contraction so that both associations can be appreciated without confusing their origins.
