Marla

Marla is commonly treated as a shortened form of Marlene, which brings together Maria and Magdalene. The Maria part belongs to the Mary and Miriam name family, whose oldest meaning remains debated. Magdalene refers to a connection with Magdala, the place associated with Mary Magdalene in the New Testament, rather than adding a second personality trait.

This gives Marla a layered history beneath its compact shape. It can honor a Marlene directly while also carrying a more distant link to names such as Mary and Magdalena. The name is complete in its own right, with a different rhythm from the longer forms. Parents drawn to its familiar midcentury style may value that history without needing to combine several uncertain translations into one invented phrase.
