Mars

Mars is the name of the Roman god associated with war and of the fourth planet in the solar system. Those are its most recognizable meanings in modern naming, but they do not settle the word’s original derivation. The older Latin form Mavors suggests a deeper history that remains uncertain, rather than a proven translation simply meaning “male.”

A family may choose Mars for astronomy, mythology, or a particular cultural association. The Red Planet connection is distinct from choosing a name for a war deity, even though the planet was named for the god. Its compact one-syllable form can stand independently; it does not need to be an abbreviation of Marcus or Marshall.
