Mathis

Mathis belongs to the Matthew and Matthias family, whose Hebrew roots express a gift from God. The spelling is established in French and German naming, giving it a history beyond a modern shortening of Matthew. Its single t and final s make it visually distinct from both of the longer forms while keeping the same inherited meaning.

In French, Mathis has a final stressed syllable that can remind English speakers of the painter's surname Matisse. That is a sound association rather than evidence that the given name was invented to honor the artist. German and French speakers may say the name differently, so a family's language can influence its pronunciation. Mathis offers a way to continue a Matthew-family connection while using an established continental European form.
