Matilde

Matilde is used in Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese, carrying a name whose roots are older than any of those modern forms. The Germanic elements maht and hild refer to strength and battle. Their combination lies behind Matilda, Mathilde, and other members of this widely traveled family.

Medieval royal households helped spread the name across Europe. Matilda of Flanders, the wife of William the Conqueror, is one historical bearer of a related form; the name also belongs to the medieval Empress Matilda. Matilde continues that same inheritance with its own language-specific ending. Mafalda is another related form found in southern Europe, while Tilda can serve as a short form. The battle element is a historical piece of the name's construction, leaving modern families free to value its strength meaning in their own way.
