Mattie

Mattie can be a familiar form of Matilda, Martha, Matthew, and other longer names. Those names have different origins: Matilda relates to strength in battle, Martha to a lady or mistress, and Matthew to a gift of God. Mattie does not combine all of those meanings into one translation.

The short form has also long been used independently, including as a literary name in Edith Wharton’s Ethan Frome. Matty is a spelling alternative, while the full forms give families different ways to preserve an ancestral connection. Parents can choose Mattie as the complete given name or make the longer name part of its personal story.
