Maxwell

Maxwell is a Scottish surname from a place name traditionally understood as “Mack’s stream.” The first part refers to a personal name, rather than simply the Latin word for “great.” That distinction matters when comparing Maxwell with Maximilian or Maximus: they can share the nickname Max without sharing the same origin.

The surname has a scientific association through physicist James Clerk Maxwell. As a first name, Maxwell also appears in the fictional Maxwell Smart and the Beatles song “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer.” Max and Maxie offer shorter everyday options. Parents who want a full name behind Max can compare Maxwell’s Scottish place-name history with the Roman background of Maximilian before choosing which connection fits their family.
