Maxx

Maxx is a modern spelling of Max, the familiar short form associated with names such as Maxwell, Maximilian, and Maximus. The meaning greatest comes specifically through the Latin Maximus family. Maxwell has a separate surname origin, so a family’s intended longer name can make a difference to the story behind the short form.

The doubled x changes the visual appearance while usually preserving the one-syllable English sound of Max. American football player Maxx Crosby is a recognizable bearer of this exact spelling. Maxx can stand alone as the formal name or represent a preferred spelling of an inherited nickname. The extra letter gives it a distinctive written form without creating a separate ancient root or a stronger version of the meaning.
