Mccoy

Mccoy comes from the surname usually written McCoy, an anglicized Gaelic patronymic referring to a son of Aodh. Aodh is a personal name associated with fire, but “son of Aodh” is the direct surname explanation. It identifies a family relationship rather than literally describing a child as born from fire.

McCoy preserves the surname’s familiar internal capital, while Mccoy is common in records that standardize capitalization. Mac is a possible shortening. Jazz pianist McCoy Tyner gives the name a recognizable musical association, and families carrying the surname may value that heritage independently of any famous bearer. The choice of capitalization can help retain the family’s preferred written form.
