Melisa

Melisa is a spelling of Melissa, a name from the Greek word for a honeybee. That word is related to meli, meaning honey, so the insect and its food supply are linked within the name’s vocabulary. Melisa keeps the single-s spelling used in several modern languages, including Spanish and Turkish.

The name belongs to the wider tradition of using words from the natural world as personal names. A honeybee gives it a specific living image, while ideas such as cooperation or sweetness are associations people may make with the insect rather than additional translations. Melissa is the closest familiar alternative, and Mel can shorten either form. For families using more than one language, Melisa’s spelling may preserve the version already established in their own naming tradition.
