Melo

Melo can be a shortened form of Carmelo, a name associated with Mount Carmel. The Hebrew place name is connected with cultivated or fruitful land, commonly expressed as garden or orchard. Through Carmelo, this small name has a geographical and religious background that is much broader than its four-letter shape suggests.

Carmelo developed within the devotional naming tradition connected with Our Lady of Mount Carmel, and Melo can preserve that family connection in an everyday form. The same spelling also occurs as a Portuguese surname with its own history, so its origin depends on the family using it. Parents choosing Melo from Carmelo can understand the orchard meaning as inherited from that longer name rather than as a direct translation of Melo in every language.
