Mercedes

Mercedes is a Spanish name connected with the Marian title Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes, or Our Lady of the Mercies. Its meaning refers to mercies or gracious gifts. That religious name history is older than the automobile association that many English speakers now notice first.

The name appears in literature and opera, including The Count of Monte Cristo and Carmen. Those associations give Mercedes a story beyond a commercial brand, while the Spanish title explains the meaning more directly. Its final s belongs to the full name and does not imply an added surname. A family choosing Mercedes for religious or cultural reasons can keep that original connection at the center of its story.
