Mercy

Mercy is an English word name expressing compassion, particularly kindness or forgiveness when someone has the power to withhold it. It belongs to the tradition of virtue names used by English-speaking Christian families, including Puritan communities. The writer Mercy Otis Warren provides a historical namesake, while literary characters have helped keep the name familiar beyond its religious setting.

Mercy gives an abstract quality a concise two-syllable shape. Grace and Hope are useful comparisons for parents who want an equally direct virtue name, while Merry resembles its sound but has a separate meaning. The full name can stand comfortably on its own without requiring a longer formal version or an invented nickname.
