Messiah

Messiah is an English religious word used as a personal name. Its history reaches back to a Hebrew word meaning “anointed,” with related transmission through Aramaic and other languages. In religious use it refers to an expected deliverer; in Christianity, Messiah is a title applied to Jesus.

That title gives the name a more explicit religious association than a name whose sacred meaning is hidden in older roots. It does not mean that a child is expected to fulfill the title. In English, Messiah has three syllables, with the stress in the middle. Families considering it may find the religious significance as important to discuss as the sound or spelling.
