Mika

Mika has more than one independent history. In Finland, it is a form of Mikael, ultimately from the Hebrew name Michael and its question “Who is like God?” In Japanese use, Mika can be written with different kanji, so its meaning depends on the characters chosen. “Beautiful fragrance” is one possible interpretation rather than a definition shared by every Japanese Mika.

That combination of histories explains why Mika appears in different naming traditions and is used for both boys and girls. Japanese singer Mika Nakashima is one familiar bearer, while the Mikael connection gives other families a way to honor a Michael. The same short Roman-letter spelling can therefore hold quite different personal and linguistic stories.
