Mildred

Mildred is an Old English name combining elements for gentleness and strength. That pairing gives it a more layered meaning than either quality alone. The name has deep Anglo-Saxon roots and a long religious history through Saint Mildred, an early medieval abbess associated with Minster-in-Thanet in England.

Later cultural bearers include jazz singer Mildred Bailey and the fictional Mildred Pierce, whose story became a celebrated film with Joan Crawford. Millie offers a familiar short form that sounds quite different from the full name while keeping its opening. Mildred can therefore carry both an old English linguistic story and a recognizable twentieth-century heritage, with “gentle strength” providing a clear thread between those different associations.
