Meaning & origin

What does Morgan mean?

Morgan means “Welsh name traditionally linked with the sea”.

Morgan is a Welsh name with a history as both a given name and a surname. It is connected with older forms containing mor, meaning “sea,” while interpretations of the remaining elements differ. “Sea-born,” “sea-circle,” and “sea-song” should not simply be treated as interchangeable literal translations.

Morgan le Fay gives the name an Arthurian association. Modern Morgan is used for boys and girls, and a family surname may provide an additional personal reason for choosing it. Mo is a possible short form, although Morgan itself is concise. Its Welsh history is more certain than a single poetic English gloss.
