Morris

Morris is an English form of Maurice, from the Latin name Mauritius. The older name is associated with Maurus and the people of ancient Mauretania in North Africa. Although it is often simplified to dark-skinned in name lists, that geographic and historical background provides a fuller explanation than a modern description of appearance.

Morrie Schwartz, the teacher remembered in Tuesdays with Morrie, was born Morris, and Morrie remains a familiar short form. Henry James used Morris for a character in Washington Square, while the surname of designer William Morris adds an artistic association. Mo is another concise option. The name’s history includes both a long-established given name and a recognizable surname, giving families several possible personal connections.
