Myriam

Myriam is a form of Miriam particularly associated with French usage. Its y makes the spelling distinctive while keeping it within the same ancient name family. The oldest meaning remains unsettled: an Egyptian connection with beloved is one proposed explanation, alongside several Hebrew interpretations. The biblical identity of Miriam is much clearer than the etymology of her name.

In the Hebrew Bible, Miriam is the sister of Moses and Aaron. Her story connects the name with the survival of the infant Moses and the wider account of the Israelites' departure from Egypt. Myriam preserves that heritage in a spelling familiar in French-speaking communities and also used elsewhere. Miriam, Miryam, and Mirjam offer nearby alternatives for families choosing which language or family tradition they want the written form to reflect.
