Nadia

Nadia is connected with the Slavic name Nadezhda, meaning hope. It also represents a separate Arabic name associated with qualities such as tenderness or moisture. The same English spelling can therefore carry different histories, and those meanings should not be combined as though they came from one original word.

Gymnast Nadia Comăneci provides a familiar modern namesake. Nadya and Nadiya offer related written forms whose use may depend on language, while Nadezhda preserves the longer Slavic name. Parents can choose the form familiar in their own family and explain its intended route. Nadia’s concise shape makes it usable in full without requiring a nickname.
