Neil

Neil is an English form of Irish Niall, a name whose ultimate meaning is uncertain. Cloud, champion, and other explanations appear in name histories, but none should be presented as an unquestioned translation of every Neil. The connection with Niall is more secure than any single short definition offered for its ancient root.

Astronaut Neil Armstrong and musicians Neil Young and Neil Diamond give the name familiar scientific and artistic associations. Neal is a close spelling alternative, while Niall preserves the Irish form more directly and may suggest a different pronunciation. Neil's one syllable makes it naturally concise without needing a nickname. A family tribute can be its most important meaning even when the oldest etymology remains unresolved.
