Nellie

Nellie developed from Nell, a familiar short form associated with names such as Ellen, Helen, and Eleanor. Because those longer names have different and sometimes uncertain histories, Nellie does not have one literal meaning that applies to every use. Its origin is clearest when a particular family’s longer name is known.

Nelly is a close spelling alternative, while Nell offers a shorter everyday form. Nellie can also be registered independently, keeping the affectionate ending as part of the official name. Parents honoring an Eleanor or Ellen can preserve that connection without repeating the full name, or keep Nellie as a nickname alongside it.
