Norma

Norma became particularly familiar through Bellini’s opera of the same name. It is often connected with Latin norma, meaning a rule or pattern, and it has also been understood as a feminine counterpart of Norman. Those explanations offer different routes into the name, so its meaning is best presented with that history in mind.

The operatic heroine gives Norma an artistic association that goes beyond its everyday twentieth-century use. Marilyn Monroe’s birth name, Norma Jeane, provides another well-known cultural connection. The name is short enough to use without a nickname, with a rounded opening and a simple final a. For a family looking through older family records, Norma can feel personal and familiar while still carrying those literary and musical links.
