Oriana

Oriana has a long literary history, appearing as the beloved of Amadis in medieval romance. Its origin is uncertain, but a connection with Latin aurum, meaning gold, or later French and Spanish words from that root is often proposed. The familiar description “dawn” is therefore better treated as an association than as a settled translation.

The name continued into later literature, including Tennyson’s The Ballad of Oriana, and was also used poetically for Queen Elizabeth I. Journalist Oriana Fallaci provides a prominent modern bearer. Oriane and Orianne are related French forms, allowing the literary name to take a shorter shape without losing its broader historical connection.
