Patience

Patience is an English virtue name taken directly from the word for calm endurance or the ability to tolerate difficulty and delay. It has a long personal-name history, including use in the seventeenth century. The meaning expresses an admired quality rather than a promise about how a child will behave.

Gilbert and Sullivan’s operetta Patience gives the name a theatrical association, and it also appears in Shakespeare’s Henry VIII. These references place it within an established literary tradition rather than only a recent trend toward word names. Families comparing Patience with Faith or Hope may find its longer sound and explicit meaning distinctive without needing a separate nickname.
