Penny

Penny is a familiar form of Penelope and can also be understood as an English word name referring to a coin. Penelope’s deeper meaning is debated; “weaver” reflects the famous weaving episode in the Odyssey more clearly than a certain literal etymology. The coin association is a separate route into the spelling Penny.

The Beatles song “Penny Lane” supplies another cultural reference, itself connected with a place name. Penny can stand alone or remain an everyday form of Penelope. That choice preserves different parts of its story: the longer name makes the classical relationship explicit, while Penny keeps the brief familiar form.
