Persephone

Persephone is the daughter of Demeter in Greek mythology and becomes queen of the underworld alongside Hades. Her movement between the underworld and her mother is closely connected with stories explaining the seasons. The name’s deeper etymology is uncertain, so the familiar translation “bringer of destruction” should be presented as a proposal rather than a settled fact.

She is also called Kore, meaning maiden, while Proserpina is her Roman counterpart. Those relationships give the name a substantial mythological story without requiring one literal meaning. Persephone’s four-syllable English pronunciation and final ee sound are useful distinctions from names whose ending is read as a silent e.
