Perseus

Perseus is a name from Greek mythology, borne by the hero who defeats Medusa and rescues Andromeda. It is sometimes connected with a Greek verb meaning “to destroy,” although that derivation is not certain. The mythological figure is a firmer starting point for understanding the name than a definite translation such as “destroyer.”

The name also belongs to a constellation, extending its associations into the night sky. Modern readers may recognize Perseus as the full name of Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson. Percy offers an accessible short form for families who enjoy the classical name but want an everyday alternative. The complete three-syllable form retains a distinctly ancient Greek character, especially beside a shorter surname.
