Pietro

Pietro is the Italian form of Peter, ultimately from Greek Petros, meaning “rock” or “stone.” It belongs to the large international family of names associated with the apostle Peter. The Italian spelling keeps the old name recognizable while giving it the sound and ending established in Italian use.

Piero is a related Italian form, while Pierre and Pedro reflect French and Spanish developments. These are language relatives, not separate names with unrelated meanings. A family may choose Pietro to honor a Peter while also acknowledging Italian heritage, or simply use the form already familiar to relatives. Its Christian history explains its broad cultural reach, but the literal stone meaning and the language connection remain useful starting points whether or not a religious tribute is intended.
