Poseidon

Poseidon is the name of the Greek god associated with the sea and earthquakes. Its earliest meaning is not securely established. One proposed explanation combines a word for husband or lord with an element referring to the earth, but this remains a theory rather than a simple, certain translation of the name.

In Greek myth, Poseidon is a brother of Zeus and is commonly depicted with a trident. The name is already represented in Mycenaean writing, giving it a history older than the surviving classical stories familiar today. Its most immediate association is therefore a particular mythological figure, rather than a general Greek word meaning ocean.
