Primrose

Primrose is an English flower name connected through French with Latin words meaning “first rose.” The phrase refers to the plant’s early flowering, although a primrose is botanically different from a true rose. Its appearance among the early flowers of spring gives the name a seasonal association as well as a specific plant behind the word.

Modern readers may know Primrose Everdeen, usually called Prim, from The Hunger Games. That fictional bearer introduced another generation to a flower name with a much older linguistic history. Prim and Rosie are available short forms, emphasizing either the opening or the rose-like ending. For parents choosing Primrose, the flower itself can remain the main inspiration, while the literary connection is a separate association to take into account.
