Rae

Rae is a familiar short form of Rachel, whose Hebrew meaning is “ewe,” but it can also be chosen independently or as another spelling of Ray. Those other uses may have different histories, so Rachel’s meaning should not be applied to every Rae without knowing the family’s intended connection.

Rae Dawn Chong is a recognizable bearer of Rae as a full first name. The single syllable also makes it common in combinations and middle-name positions. Ray offers an alternative written form with the same English sound, while Rachel preserves the longer Hebrew name. A family honor may be the clearest explanation for choosing one route over another.
