Rafael

Rafael is a form of Raphael, from a Hebrew name meaning “God has healed.” Its religious association is with the archangel Raphael, who appears in the Book of Tobit. Different religious traditions include that book in their scriptures differently, so a broad biblical connection is more precise than assuming one shared canon.

Tennis player Rafael Nadal is a recognizable bearer. Rafa and Rafi are familiar short forms, while Rafe offers another option. Spanish and Portuguese pronunciations differ, particularly at the beginning of the name, so a family’s language matters. Rafael can honor a Raphael while using a spelling that fits the family’s own naming tradition.
