Ramon

Ramon is the Catalan form of Raymond, while Spanish usually writes the name Ramón. The underlying Germanic elements refer to counsel and protection, giving rise to the familiar interpretation “wise protector.” Its ultimate origin is therefore Germanic, even though the form is strongly associated with Romance-language naming.

The accent in Ramón indicates the Spanish stress, whereas Catalan Ramon follows its own spelling convention. Ray is a possible English-language nickname, though the full name already has a compact two-syllable rhythm. Parents may use Ramon to honor a Raymond while preserving a Spanish or Catalan family connection. The band name Ramones is a recognizable association, but it is separate from the much older personal-name history.
