Ria

Ria is an established short form of Maria in Dutch and German naming. It takes the final part of the longer name and gives it an independent life, in the same broad tradition as other familiar forms that eventually become given names themselves. Maria belongs to the ancient Mary and Miriam family, whose original meaning remains uncertain.

That relationship gives Ria a much longer history than its three letters might suggest. It can honor a Maria while choosing a different everyday sound, and it remains visibly connected to the longer form. The familiar form gives families another way to carry Maria across generations, keeping a recognizable piece of the longer name while changing its everyday rhythm.
