Rico

Rico is a Spanish familiar form of Ricardo, itself a form of Richard. The older Germanic name combines elements associated with ruling and strength, commonly interpreted as powerful ruler. Rico preserves that name-family connection in a much shorter form, even when it is used as the full given name.

The same spelling also resembles the Spanish word rico, used for rich or, in other contexts, delicious. Those everyday meanings can shape what a Spanish speaker hears, but the personal name’s Ricardo history offers a separate explanation. Ricardo and Richard provide longer family connections, while Rico keeps the final part of the Spanish form as the everyday name.
